Getting Bored!!

Yesterday at the yard the weather was horible! It was pouring down wi rain, and everyone was in a narky mood. To top it all of we never got to ride either! As the 3rd and 2nd years both got to ride so the horses were to tired and we didn't have enough time to go riding as tha mini-bus was coming to pick us up. I was really dissapointed with that!

Back from our holidays

Well we have just come back from a two week holiday, which meant that we didn't go out to the horses at the yard. When we did get back to the yard there was a lot to do like; the muck heap, the beds in the stables, the yard, the outdoor school and taking the horses in. The first day we went back was crap as all we really did was tidy up the yard, we never got to ride as the third and second years all rode and there wasn't any horses that were dry enough from sweating to ride, so we had to lunge instead!! :( FUN!

The muck heap was messy as anything! All the bedding and droppings and the rest of the stuff was just piled up ontop of everything, even though we tidied it up before we left and with making a ramp it wasn't getting used that way it was just getting piled up at the bottom. When we did tidy it up we curved it slightly at the bottom, making it look neater and we tidied the ramp so its accesible.

At the yard we have been split up into groups, each group has a number of tasks on the yard to do. The group I am in is the second group which deals with all the beds on the side that the water tap is on. Yesterday we got showed how to put the beds up the way the tutors would prefer, it was Allistair that was showing us. He told us that we dont need hing banks against the walls and that the beds should be brought further forward as there are big horses in the yard and they like their space. The other job that my group does is sweeping the big yard wich can be a bit of a pain if there is only a couple of people doing it.

weekends

Hi now that the college is back from our two weeks holidays. This means that the horses will start to come back to the yard the weather from now on gets worse meaning that the horses get kept in.

Due to the horses being kept in for the winter months we need to work one in five weekends form now till the Easter holidays. If we are working a weekend we end up working an eleven day week this may sound hard work but the weekends are a Lot of fun. The weekends start way us skipping out the beds then feeding the horses. After the horses are dun we take them out to the Field then the rest of the day is spent recovering from the night before and getting the krak he he. We get lunch at about 12.15 till 2.00 then we tidy up the yard and get the horses back in from the field then we leave about 3.45 and come back to Thurso. On Monday we start the college all over again.

It is also good because not every student has to be out at the yard every weekend we are split in to groups of about six students and one of the Tutors ether Marion or Alaster . It's good this year as there are ten 1st year students which means that we only have to do four weekends in total which works out at one in five.

holiday!!!

We have just had a two week holiday. So most of the horses went home for a break. On the week prior to the holiday the horses started to go home. This meant that if a horses was going home during the day we had to clean the tack, gather all the horses things together like rugs, boots, saddle, bridal, numnar and so on. We had to make sure all of it was clean and that non of it was broken or damaged. When all the horses were away that were going home we had to clean all the other horses tack for the end of term. Also when people don't have there own horse box the tutors will take the horse home with the collage trailer. if this is used we also have to Cleon out the trailer so it is clean for the next time it is used.

collimore trip

Yesterday the 1st,2nd and 3rd years that wanted two were taken down to collimore so that we could watch Lucinda Green do a cross country lesson.

It was quite interesting as she spoke to the audience and told us what why were doing right and Wong and how to improve. This will help when I start to jump as we got told what was the right way to jump over different types.

In the afternoon we went outside and watched the riders go over some outside cross country jumps this was really good because we got to see how the riders coped with the reel jumps. There was also some highs and lows for the rides we had three falls one when they were worming up then there was one that came of over the ditch jump where she had also added a skinny at both sides of the ditch.

she also told us that the three main areas of cross country which are ditch jumps, water jumps and drop jumps

On The Yard

Last week on the yard it was a normal week. Until Thursday when everything went wrong!!!! All the timetables were mix up so no one new what they were doing, one of the teachers were not there, Marion was of to France for a week so there were only 3 teachers and 3 years. However the first and second years normally get split up, so half is riding with Mary or Alister and the other half is with Marion. It was very confusing so to help the third years learn they took the first years for a riding lesson. It was different from getting taught by are normal teachers and it helps them learn more to wards there PTT.

Hopefully everything will be back 2 normal this week.

The Horses

At the collage we have 17 horses they are all very friendly. All of the horse stay in during the day and get turned out at night in the summer time. In the winter all the horses stay in at night and get turned out during the day.

The horses are Wag, Rose, Hi Fi, Ollie, Woodie, Magners, Max, Whisper, Rocky, Casper, Izzy, Tashe, Frankie and Teddy. All of these horses get used by students in and out of a school. They all get lounged and jump. Some are slightly easier to ride than others so some horses only get ridden by 2nd and 3rd years.

Then we have Amy, Emma and Sprite. Theses do not get ridden. This is because Amy and Emma are youngsters and have not been broken properly and Sprite does not get used as he has teeth problems.
